INVITATION TO THE REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

WHAT: Inaugural Session of the Steering Committee (SC) of the African-Arab
Joint Action Plan (JAP) on Agricultural Development and Food Security in
Africa

WHEN: 30 April – 01 May- 2011

Objective: The main objective of establishing the steering committee is to facilitate

Background:

The African and Arab Ministers of Agriculture meeting in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt on the 16th of February 2010 undertook an in-depth critical review of the current state of affairs regarding agricultural development and food security in the African and Arab countries and adopted a concrete Joint Action Plan (JAP) to promote cooperation in Agricultural Development and Food Security between the two regions.
The Joint Action Plan emanates from the strategies developed and adopted by the two regions, notably the Comprehensive Africa Agriculture Development Programme (CAADP) and the Arab Strategy for Sustainable Agricultural Development (ASSAD), which both call for the attainment of significant increase in agricultural productivity leading to improved food security and the alleviation of hunger and malnutrition.
The Joint Action Plan is, therefore, endorsed as an instrument of partnership and complementarily for mutual benefits of the peoples of the two regions through the promotion of the following core priority areas of cooperation:
• Agricultural Intensification (The Food Supply shifters) initiative,
• The food reserves initiative,
• Infrastructure and trade initiative,
• Agricultural research development and technology transfer initiative, and
• Climate Change and Capacity building as cross cutting issues to attain agricultural development and food security in both regions.

In compliance with Resolution Min/Afro-Arab/Res. (I) adopted in Sharm El Sheikh an Implementation & Follow up Mechanism including a Facilitation Unit (FU) has been set up to ensure effective implementation of the Joint Action Plan.

Participants:

The inauguration session is expected to be attended by the AUC, authorities of the
