Notes to the Editor:

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal agenda of sustainable development, calling on all nations to pursue a holistic strategy that combines economic development, social inclusion, and environmental sustainability, on a basis of good governance. The purpose of the SDG Index and Dashboards is to assist countries to benchmarking their SDG performance, to identify priorities for action in order to achieve the 17 SDGs, and to highlight specific challenges facing African nations and sub-regions.

This is the first year the report is published and will be published annually. The Index and Dashboards is based on data available from internationally organizations such as UN agencies, African Development Bank and academic papers. The Africa Index and Dashboards aim to help tackle three key problems by 1) addressing the urgent need for comparable data, 2) resolving issues between international and national level statistics, and 3) raising awareness of the SDGs as a shared framework.

The Africa Index and Dashboards are a simple tool for presenting countries’ challenges and progress in achieving the SDGs. It provides greater granularity on trends and performance on the path to the SDGs to support national, regional and continental discussions about development priorities and help countries pinpoint key implementation challenges

The SDGC/A will work with governments and other partners in the region to help build and strengthen capacity on data and statistical systems. For this, the Center is expecting to coordinate an Africa SDG Index Day at the national level, where all government ministries and all other partners will examine the Index results, so that they can serve as evidence to inform policy.

Media representatives are invited to take part and cover the event.
