The Board of African Union Leadership Academy (AULA) held its second annual meeting at the AU headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia on Thursday, August 15, 2019, to discuss the way forward on how to strategically position the AULA to complement the effort of the African Union to achieve its set goals.

The Deputy Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Kwesi Quartey kick started the meeting by outlining the areas the Union would like the AULA to focus on; which include accelerating the continental integration process, the implementation of the AfCFTA, leveraging digitalization among others.

In his address, H.E Kwesi Quartey charged the Board to come up with creative ways of accelerating the integration agenda, and deepen the spirit of Pan Africanism in all Africans, in order to move the sense of citizenship beyond national boundaries and generate enthusiasm for collective ownership of the continent-wide policy of ‘Agenda 2063: the Africa we want’ H.E. Quartey expressed his excitement on the launching of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA), and called on the Board to play active role in assisting the AU to successfully implement the AfCFTA, by stressing that it holds the potential of addressing the menace of unemployment rate on the continent, which poses serious security implications/risks.

In response, the Board enumerated a number of ways of addressing the issues raised by H.E Quartey and briefed him on the priority areas they are working on, the challenges they have encountered so far, and proposed solutions. They have called on the AUC for specific collaboration in resolving some of the challenges.

The next meeting is scheduled for next year in South Africa at the invitation of the Nelson Mandela University.

The African Union Leadership Academy is a high level Pan African Leadership and Development agency driving capacity building process of the realization of the African Union’s Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want.
