AU urges dialogue to seek a peaceful solution to military confrontation in Ethiopia
January 13, 2022
On November 3rd, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat urged all parties to safeguard the territorial integrity, unity and national sovereignty of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, following the escalation of military confrontation in the country. He further urged the parties to engage in dialogue to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the country, and called on the parties to engage with the AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa, former Nigerian President H.E Olusegun Obasanjo.
On 13 November 2021, Mr. Obasanjo issued a statement noting that he was optimistic that common ground towards a peaceful resolution of the conflict can be secured. The interlocutors he had engaged with on all sides had “stated their wish for peace, security, and stability in Ethiopia, adding that “the main point of difference between the actors is in the means by which they seek to achieve this essential objective.”
