Fridays of the Commission

What is Fridays of the Commission?

The Fridays of the Commission offers to all staff of the Commission, African diplomats grouped within the Permanent Representatives Committee and staff of United Nations institutions in Addis Ababa and students from universities and institutes of higher learning in Addis Ababa, an opportunity to meet and exchange views and ideas on the various problems affecting the socio-economic, political and cultural development of Africa.

This forum was conceived by the Department of Economic Affairs to respond to the needs of the Commission, Member States, African and non-African diplomats posted in Addis Ababa, in regards to the understanding of economic, political and social problems of our times and aims to achieve the following main objectives:

  • Assist in the comprehension of great contemporary political, economic, social and cultural problems;
  • Contribute in mastering the operations of institutions that lead the world today;
  • Contribute in throwing light on economic policies and strategies proposed to African countries by international financial institutions;
  • Identify major obstacles to integration in Africa and propose ways and means of going around them;
  • Promote the comprehension of the globalization process and its consequence on African economies.

How to Partner with FOC

Partners interested in organizing a successful and productive Conference/Debate with the Department of Economic Affairs should assure that the following conditions are met:

  1. A relevant theme that would interest and stir up participants should be identified;
  2. Relevant speakers who are prominent and influencers in their specialized field should be invited
  3. Speakers should be contacted a month before the event to submit their communication to the commission for the purpose of the edition of the bulletin;
  4. Relevant topics of discussion

5. Budget should be made available to cover the following expenses:

  • Tickets of the speakers in the event they come from outside Addis Ababa
  • Honorarium for the speakers at the AUC rate;
  • DSA for the hotel accommodation for the speakers at UN Rate;
  • Car rental service for day to day activities during the event
  • Interpretation services
  • Advertisement of the event through medias, AUC Website; Local newspaper; flyers and posters
  • Provide banners and roll up banners
  • Cocktail that would be served at the end of the conference/debate
  • Printing and publishing of the Bulletins of the Friday of the Commission
