Abidjan to host First High Level Panel on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment and MDG’s Post 2015

Addis Ababa, 30 September 2013 – In order to critically assess the current MDGs, specifically MDGs 3, 5 and 6, and identify impediments to progress made in the implementation of gender related goals as well as strengthen the African women’s input to the African Common Position on Post 2015 Agenda, African women from all walks of like will be meeting on 2nd to 4 October 2013 in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, within the framework of the First African Union High Level Panel on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment under the theme: The Post 2015 Agenda for Women within the Context of Economic Empowerment ".

Organised by the Women, Gender and Development Directorate and the Department of Economic Affairs of the African Union Commission(AUC), jointly with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Solidarity, of Family, of the Woman and the Child of Cote d’Ivoire, the high level panel will be an opportunity to exchange views on an African common position on Post 2015 Agenda to engage the global community on the critical needs of African women in the coming twenty years, and mobilize continental support for existing initiatives on gender transformation.

Worth recalling that, the African Common Position was discussed during the May, 2013 Summit and it was decided to establish a High Level Committee of Heads of State and Government to crystalize and synthesize, as well as further consult as deemed necessary, so as to finalize the African Common Position and ensure that the priorities identified in the said African Common Position are integrated on the New Global Agenda.

Journalists are invited to cover the First High Level on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment and MDG’s Pos 2015.
