Who: Representatives from UNCTAD and AU Commissioner for Trade and Industry

When: 14 September 2017 at 11:00 AM

Objective: The objective of the Press Conference is to present the key messages of the report to the media and link these messages to the African and Ethiopian stories. The Commissioner for Trade and Industry, Amb. Albert M. Muchanga will give his views on the key messages of report in particular in the context of the African Union Agenda 2063 and one of its flagship project, namely the Continental Free Area (CFTA) and your Vision 2063.

Background:
With the global economy stubbornly stuck in second gear, UNCTAD’s upcoming Trade and Development Report sets out an ambitious alternative policy route to build more inclusive and caring economies. In the absence of a coordinated expansion led by the advanced economies, UNCTAD has assessed alternative options for sustaining the limited global economic pick-up and forecasts the risks of ignoring the excesses of hyper globalization.

The UNCTAD report addresses the following key questions:

• How can global institutions halt the cycle of hyper globalization fueling restrictive business practices?
• Will robots reduce the benefits of industrialization as a development strategy?
• What is the relationship between increasing women’s employment and more inclusive growth?
• How does indebtedness relate to insecurity?
