2nd African Union Specialised Committee (STC) on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment

INVITATION TO REPRESENTATIVES OF THE MEDIA

What: 2nd AFRICAN UNION SPECIALISED COMMITTEE (STC) ON
GENDEREQUALITY AND WOMEN’S EMPOWERMENT.

When: AU Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Who: The African Union Commission through its Women, Gender and Development Directorate (WGDD)

Format: The 2nd Specialised Technical Committee on Gender Equality and Women´s Empowerment will be held as follows: 04 – 06 December, 2017: Experts Meeting and 07 – 08 December, 2017: Ministerial meeting.

Background: The Specialised Technical Committee on Gender Equality and Women´s Empowerment (STC on GEWE) is a statutory organ of the AU in accordance with Article 5 (1) (g) of the AU Constitutive Act. Article 15 of the Constitutive Act requires the STC to, among others work in close collaboration with the AUC Departments to ensure the harmonization of policies and other work of the AU; ensure supervision, follow up and evaluate the implementation of decisions taken by the organs of the Union; as well as submit reports and recommendations to the Executive Council on the implementation of the Constitutive Act. The STC is composed of Ministers and Experts (senior officials) responsible for gender and women’s affairs.

Objective: The overall objective of the 2nd STC on GEWE will be to present for the Ministers’ consideration, adoption and decision reports on the AU’s work on gender equality and women’s empowerment, including on, among others, the new AU Gender Strategy; evaluation of the 2009 Gender Policy; new AU Gender Communications Strategy and Solemn Declaration on Gender Equality in Africa (SDGEA).

Participants: The meeting will be attended by AU Ministers in charge of gender and women’s affairs and Experts (senior officials)

Media representatives are invited to cover the Opening ceremony of the Ministerial meeting on 07 November, 2017, at the Medium Conference Room, African Union Commission Headquarters, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
