Dissemination of the African Union Strategy for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment 2018 – 2020

INVITATION TO MEDIA REPRESENTATIVES

What: Dissemination of the African Union Strategy for Gender Equality and Women’s

Empowerment 2018 – 2020

Theme: Social protection systems, access to public services and sustainable for

gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls

When: 13 March 2019

Time: 10.30 – 16.00

Where: Offices of the AU Permanent Mission in New York.

Background:

The AU will present this strategy to key stakeholders in the margins of the 63rd Commission on the Status of Women in New York on March 15, 2019. The CSW is the world’s largest gathering to advance, set norms and standards for gender equality and women’s empowerment. It convenes women and men from around the world to negotiate and celebrate progress and keep track of changes in the field. The CSW, therefore, provides an optimal platform to present the AU Strategy for Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment, thus ensuring both Africa and the rest of the world is aware of priorities the AU will pursue in the next decade towards accelerating progress for the implementation of this continental and global agenda.

This strategy, closely aligned with Agenda 2063, constitutes the Union’s roadmap to operationalizing existing legal and policy frameworks guiding Africa’s commitment to gender equality and women’s empowerment. It is the result of extensive consultations with key stakeholders and secondary data review of agreed best practices and innovations in the field. Seizing the current global focus on gender equality and women’s empowerment, the strategy is expected to provide greater traction towards the transformation of the goals and objectives of Aspiration 6 of Agenda 2063 and Goal 5 of the SDGs into actionable and achievable outcomes for women and girls on the continent.

Outcomes:

Partners are able to identify centres of joint investment and partnership in the strategy
Increased political support at the highest level towards the implementation and accountability for the objectives and actions outlined in the strategy
Continued advocacy to achieve gender equality and women’s empowerment on the continent and mobilization of key actors.
