Background

Climate change, biodiversity loss, environmental degradation, disaster risks, ocean and related maritime challenges, inter alia, are some of the major challenges affecting sustainable development on the African Continent. As COVID 19 strikes the World, resources required to combat the negative effects of climate change are even more compromised, making it challenging to transform our natural resources, climate strategies and policies into meaningful climate actions.

The African Union in collaboration with its partners and member states is working tireless to bridge resources gap through collaborations with its stakeholders to effectively implement climate change commitments as stipulated in the Agenda 2063, the Africa we want. The commission is also working with its member states to realize the mission and vision of the Paris Agreement through supporting them to develop and implement climate resilient development plans and policies.

In Enhancing Climate Actions in Africa, the Africa Climate Week 2021 will make available a platform for representatives of African national and subnational governments, cities, the private sector, financial institutions and civil society to jointly share experiences on National actions and economy-wide approaches, integrated approaches for climate-resilient development, and Seizing transformation opportunities. The ACW 2021 Virtual Thematic Sessions take the rhythm of climate action in the region, explore climate challenges and opportunities, and showcase ambitious solutions. This is an important opportunity for African stakeholders to build momentum towards success at COP26.

The African Union Commission will participate at the high-level opening of the ACW, host a thematic session and showcase its climate actions through a video at Action Hub alongside partner organizations of ACW2021.
