Guidance on Community Social Distancing During COVID-19 Outbreak
In Africa, the number of COVID-19 cases and impacted countries has been increasing steadily. As of 12 March 2020, 129 cases have been diagnosed in 12 countries, with one death recorded. The experience in countries outside Africa is that, after initial cases are diagnosed, community transmission occurs rapidly. Member States need to immediately implement individual social distancing and plan to implement community social distancing.

Social distancing is an accepted strategy to delay and diminish outbreaks of respiratory infections, such as influenza. Similar to influenza, the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) can be readily transmitted human-to-human through respiratory droplets and contact with a contaminated surface.

Africa CDC has been asked by Member States for the best approach to managing people returning from area affected by the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. The World Health Organization (WHO) has provided detailed guidance.1,2 Africa CDC is providing additional guidance based on questions from Member States and in consideration of the African context.

Outbreak Brief #9: Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) Global Epidemic
Outbreak Update: Since the last brief, 57,936 new novel coronavirus (COVID-19) cases1 and 2,796 new deaths have been reported globally. Forty-two countries, including 19 new African countries, are reporting cases2, and 26 new countries, including three African countries, are reporting deaths3 for the first time. To date, 167,511 total COVID-19 confirmed cases, and 6,606 related deaths have been reported.

COVID-19 Scientific and Public Health Policy Update – 10 March 2020
A highly preliminary population genetic analyses of 103 SARS-CoV-2 genomes indicates that the viruses could have evolved into two major types (designated L and S) and that the L type (newer and more aggressive) initially was more prevalent, but its frequency decreased after the end of January as more severe selective pressure was placed on it.
