The opening launch will be graced by H.E. Amb. Minata SAMATE CESSOUMA, Commissioner for Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development (HHS) at the African Union Commission, Ms. Amy E. POPE, Director General of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), key continental, regional and national players in migration, and the Diplomatic Community, among others.
BACKGROUND:
In 2022, the AUC and IOM launched the first edition of the Africa Migration Report. The report took a distinctly regional approach to inform knowledge on migration in Africa. This first edition, titled Challenging the Narrative, aimed to deconstruct negative perceptions of migration in Africa by addressing contextual realities and bringing to light practical interventions and evidence-based knowledge on what is happening on the ground.
The need for more editions was inevitable, to aid tracking evolving migration trends, informing knowledge collection for evidence-based policies, and existing migration interventions that are enabling integration.
This 2024 second edition of the Africa Migration Report is a collaborative endeavor between the AUC and IOM, looking at the policy landscape for managing human mobility, mostly post COVID-19. Building on the goal set by the first edition of the Africa Migration Report to challenge the narrative on African migration, this edition looks at policy not as a static set of engagements but as a dynamic array of tools that can respond to ongoing and emerging challenges. The report invites us to think deeper about what already exists, how it was deployed during the pandemic, and what lessons can be drawn from that to enhance our collective capacity to manage human mobility.
Under the theme: ‘Connecting the threads: Linking policy, practice and the welfare of the African migrant’, the report takes stock of the many AUC-IOM joint initiatives that aim to enhance migration governance on the continent like the Migration Policy Framework for Africa, Joint Labour Migration Programme (JLMP), the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons and the African Union Horn of Africa Initiative on Human Trafficking and Smuggling of Migrants.
