Press Briefing of the Secretary General of the AU Commission
Within the framework of the 25th AU Summit Ambassador Jean Mfasoni, Secretary General of the AU Commission (AUC); will on Wednesday 10 June 2015 at 14:30 hold a press briefing on the following issues:
- Progress of the Summit and its parallel side events;
- Streamlining of AU Summit;
- Highlight on major issues to be discussed at the Summit
The briefing will be held in Media Briefing Room (3rd floor), at the Sandton Convention Center, in Johannesburg, South Africa.

PRESS RELEASE Nº07/ 24thAU SUMMIT
AUC Secretary General and the Director of Information and Communication brief the press on the state of preparation of the 24THAU Summit
Addis Ababa, 26 January 2015-Ambassador Jean Mfasoni, Secretary General of the AU Commission and Mrs. Habiba Mejri-Cheikh, Director of Information and Communication of the African Union on 26 January 2015 briefed the continental and international journalists on the agenda of event of the Summit so as to prepare them for the media coverage during the 24th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the African Union.
Mrs Habiba Mejri-Cheikh started with a brief on the modalities of coverage during the Summit. She highlighted the fact that the accreditation of media to cover the Summit is done in collaboration with the Ethiopian Government. “The AUC-DIC and the Ethiopian authorities are working hand in hand to ensure the good visibility of the Summit”, she said. She presented the modalities for media accreditation and the useful tips to enable the journalists do their work successfully. This included: measures to access the plenary hall for coverage, cooperation with the AU security officers to facilitate and ensure smooth access to information for their news reporting as well as the media center facilities put at their disposal by the AUC to enable them file their stories timely. The AUC Secretaries General on the other hand presented the program of the Summit to the journalists. He insisted on the item on Agenda 2063. He also provided to the journalists some explanations on the African Union efforts to eradicate the Ebola in countries affected by these epidemics. Ambassador Mfasoni stated that another burning issue that will be discussed during this Summit is the state of peace and security within the Continent. In that regard, he said that a report on the state on the fight against terrorism in Africa will be presented.
The press conference ended with a Questions and Answers session which provided the AUC Secretary General and the Director of Information and Communication to clarify the inquiries and preoccupation of the journalists with respect to some agenda items of the Summit to enable them get a good background of the different thematic areas while covering the Summit.

Secretary General of the African Union commission Discloses Key Events and Issues for the 22nd summit of the Commission
Addis Ababa, 21 January 2014: Ambassador Jean Mfasoni, Secretary General of the African Union Commission, held a press conference today January 21st 2014 at the African Union Commission headquarter in Addis Ababa. He disclosed the key events, major expectations, personalities to make appearances and mentioned a number of critical issues of concern that will be discussed at the 22nd African Union Summit from the 21st to the 31st of January.
In his outline of the major events, the Ambassador mentioned the upcoming election of a new Chairperson of the African Union. Three Deputy chairpersons and a rapporteur will also be elected.
The Secretary General announced that the 9th AU gender summit will be held from 21st to the 23rd January alongside the meetings of the Permanent Representative Committees The Ministerial retreat of heads of council, which will be carried out from 24th January till the 26th was also mentioned as a major segment of the summit.
The Assembly of Heads of State and Government will be held on January 30, followed by the African Solidarity Conference which is focused on “African solutions for African problems” on February 1, with a particular concern for post-conflict countries on the continent.
Mr. Mfasoni also briefed the media on the personalities whose presence as guests of honor is expected for the summit. The Prime Minister of South Korea, the Presidents of Haiti and Palestine, Deputy Secretary General of the UN, Foreign Ministers of African and non-African states and heads of AU organs are among the expected guests of honor and guest speakers to attend the Summit of Heads of States.
As for the major issues of concern for the assembly, agricultural transformation and food security, is Africa’s theme of the year 2014, said the Ambassador. This will be promoted so as to promote the development of member states. Other major topics for the summit as announced by the Secretary General include reflecting on Agenda 2063, peace and Security, review of Operation of Africa’s Peace and Security Architecture, inter-Generational dialogue, water, sanitation, Integrated African Maritime Strategy 2015, And Pan-African initiative of E-Network and education.
