Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 6 April 2017: The Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat has condoled with President Uhuru Kenyatta of Kenya following the death of President Kenyatta’s sister Margaret Wambui Kenyatta.

Margaret Wambui Kenyatta died on Wednesday 5 April at the age of 89 following a brief illness. The Chairperson of the AU Commission sent his sincere condolences to the family of President Kenyatta and the people of Kenya for their loss.

Margaret Wambui Kenyatta, first daughter Kenya’s founding President, Jomo Kenyatta, was active in the development of Kenya and was deputy mayor of Nairobi in 1966 and mayor in 1971. She was the first African female mayor of Nairobi and the second African woman in the country to hold the position. She served as Kenya’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, from 1976 to 1986.

The continent mourns with Kenya and also celebrates the life of a pioneer of Africa’s development.
