Addis Ababa, 21 June 2017 - The African Union Leadership Academy and Zhejiang Normal University co-organized a High-Level Dialogue and Think Tank Forum titled. Fighting Against Poverty: Learning from the Experience of Poverty Alleviation in China and Africa. The forum took place on the 21st of June 2017 at African Union Conference Centre, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia
The forum was intended to stimulate sharing of experiences from multiple perspectives with AU global partners on issues of common concerns, and showcase of concrete actions and successful experiences. The forum also falls within the efforts of promoting the China-Africa Comprehensive Strategic and Cooperative Partnership, and expediting the implementation of the outcome of the year Johannesburg Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC).
The forum was opened by H.E. Mousa Faki, Chairperson of the African Union Commission and H.E. Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of the People’s Republic of China.
The forum participants were the researchers and practitioners specialized in areas of poverty research, policy programs and advocacy, staff of the African Union Commission, Regional Economic Community, civil servants and policy-makers. The participants from the Chinese delegation were made up of academics, staff from the Ministry of Foreign affairs, researchers and practitioners specialized in areas of poverty research and policy programs. The forum was also attended by high-level participants including:
• Members of Permanent Representative committee and African Union Partners’ Group
• Professor Emmanuel Nnadozie, the Executive Secretary of the African Capacity Building Foundation,
• MR. DU Qiwen senior advisor of the foreign policy advisory group of the foreign ministry
• Dr. Newai Gabreab: Former Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister, Director of Ethiopian Development Research Institute:
The forum highlighted the way poverty has been dealt with in China and in Africa during the past two decades. It drew lessons from two decades of poverty alleviation experience of government and civil society organizations. Particular focus was given to rural poverty and to the type of policies and programs that have made the most impact. Selective case studies from Africa were presented to allow scholars, policymakers, civil society organizations, to identify key features of policy directions in successful poverty alleviation. From China, conversations were made around president Xi Jinping’s book (Up and Out of Poverty); which detailed the requisite leadership and commitment to a successful development path.
H.E Mr. Kwesi Quartey the Deputy Chairperson of AUC closed the forum with thanks to the delegates for attending, to the speakers for sharing their expertise with the participants.
The forum organizers expressed gratitude to Professor Emmanuel Nnadozie and his capable ACBF team for the tremendous support extended to the organization of this forum and for the planning of the way-forward.
