Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 7 September, 2018 - Following its first meeting held from 3-4 May 2017 at African Union Headquarters in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Senate of the Pan African University, which represents the statutory body of the University in charge of academic affairs and research, held its second meeting from 3-4 September 2018, during a workshop for the validation of the Pan African University Research and Publication Policy. The meeting was aimed at reviewing the PAU development policy and more specifically the PAU Research and Publication Policy.
During the opening ceremony, Prof. Kassa Belay, the PAU Deputy interim Rector welcomed the participants. . The meeting was attended by Senate members, PAU Rectorate Staff, PAU Directors and Consultants. After apologies from Senate members and confirmation of quorum, the agenda was presented and adopted. It was followed by the approval of the minutes of the first PAU Senate Meeting.
Thereafter, an update of PAU was presented, followed by several presentations and discussions on:
- PAU Research and Publication Policy;
- New PAU Thesis and Dissertation Guidebook;
- New PAU students’ selection outcome;
- PAU Academic Calendar.
As outcomes from the meeting, several resolutions were adopted including the following:
- In the next five years, PAU should limit the launching of new programs to the existing ones, in order for PAU to consolidate and focus on enhancing the quality of its teaching, research and outreach activities.
- The Senate members appreciated the steps taken to develop the PAU research and Publication Policy and recommended it to the PAU council for approval.
- The PAU thesis and dissertation guidebook was considered as a welcome development. The guidebook was approved and the Institutes were mandated to start using it with immediate effect.
- The Senate which received a presentation of the academic calendar recommended that the academic calendars be harmonized across all Institutes in the future and following deliberations, endorsed the Academic calendar.
The issues of sustainability of funding and the outcomes of the selection process for the 2018/2019 academic year were also raised and discussed.
