Addis Abeba, 22 January 2019: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat condemns in the strongest terms the attack in Mali that killed 10 Chadian peacekeepers, who were members of the United Nations Mission Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali (MINUSMA) on 20 January 2019.

The Chairperson extends his deepest condolences to the Government of Chad and the families of the deceased. He wishes a swift recovery to the injured, and extends his gratitude, on behalf of the African continent, for their courage.

The Chairperson calls on the authorities in Mali, and the signatory armed groups to the peace agreement, to deploy every effort to identify the perpetrators, and bring them to justice as soon as possible.

The Chairperson reiterates the African Union’s full support to and solidarity with the Government of Mali in their efforts to bring durable peace for all its citizens.

The Chairperson further wishes to pay tribute to the courage of all peacekeepers on the African continent who continue to serve at great personal risk and sacrifice.
