Winning The Fight Against Corruption: A Sustainable Path To Africa’s Transformation”

 

Gaborone, 25th November 2018 - In collaboration with the Government of the Republic of Botswana, the African Governance Platform is convening the 2018 High-Level Dialogue on Democracy, Human Rights and Governance in Africa: Trends, Challenges and Prospects under the theme of “Winning The Fight Against Corruption: A Sustainable Path To Africa’s Transformation”.

 

The Dialogue will take place at the Gaborone international Conference Center in Gaborone, Botswana, from 28 to 30 November 2018. It will be officiated by H.E Dr. Mogkweetsi E.K. Masisi, President of the Republic of Botswana. The 2018 High-Level Dialogue will be preceded by a Gender Pre-forum, taking place at TraveLodge Hotel in Gaborone, Botswana from 26 to 27 November 2018 with the objective of strengthening stakeholders’ understanding and appreciation of the gendered impact of corruption and of innovative actions that can be taken to enhance the role of women in the fight against corruption in Africa.

 

The Gender Pre-Forum will be officiated by Honourable Dorcas Makgato, Minister of Nationality, Immigration and Gender Affairs of the Republic of Botswana.

 

The High-Level Dialogue and the Gender Pre-Forum are held as part of the African Union’s initiatives to rally various segments of the African society to address the pressing need to fight corruption and impunity on the continent as a sustainable path to a prosperous and peaceful Africa.

 

Over the next five days, the discussions emanating from the High-Level Dialogue and Gender Pre-Forum will provide a frank, open and inclusive space for policymakers, the private sector, the academia and practitioners to interrogate policy and practice imperatives as well as highlight appropriate governance responses and recommendations that shall guide state and non-state actions at national, regional, continental and international levels in the fight against corruption. The two events will be attended by African Union Policy Organs, Regional Economic Communities, Member States and other State Actors as well as various non-state actors in the civil society, academia, media, youth and women organisations and networks.

The African Union during its 30th Assembly of Heads of State and Government held in January 2018 in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia launched 2018 as the African Anti-Corruption year. This followed the declaration made at the 29th Assembly of the Heads of State and Government in January 2017 to dedicate the theme for 2018 to “Winning the fight against corruption: a sustainable path to Africa’s transformation.” To further give political weight to this declaration, the AU Assembly designated H.E Muhammadu Buhari, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as the Champion for the theme of the year, in recognition of the efforts made by H.E Buhari in the fight against corruption.
