OVERVIEW: This briefing is a weekly engagement of the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) with the media to share critical updates on the current state of the COVID-19 pandemic in Africa and the status of implementing the adapted Africa Joint Continental Strategy for COVID-19 Outbreak, including Africa CDC’s response activities and the rollout of COVID-19 vaccines in AU Member States.
The Africa Vaccine Acquisition Task Team, through the African Vaccine Acquisition Trust (AVAT), under the leadership of President Cyril Ramaphosa and coordinated by Mr. Strive Masiyiwa has secured 220 million doses of J&J COVID-19 vaccines to be delivered to AU member states beginning this August, with an additional 180 million doses to follow in early 2022.
Thursday’s briefing will include updates from the AVATT Principals on the status of vaccine deliveries and the historic nature of this remarkable efforts by African Union member states working collectively to protect the continent’s health security as well as its economic future.
