      5th Edition of the African Transitional Justice Forum
      تشرين 1/أكتوبر 20, 2021 - 09:15 - تشرين 1/أكتوبر 22, 2021 - 16:15
      5th Edition of the African Transitional Justice Forum

      WHAT:          The African Union Commission (AUC) department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security (PAPS) at the African Union Commission (AUC) and the Centre for the Study of Violence and Reconciliation (CSVR) will host the fifth Edition of the African Transitional Justice Forum virtually on 20 to 21 October 2021. The Forum is an annual multistakeholder platform aimed at reviewing the state of Transitional Justice (TJ) in Africa. At the heart of this review is the identification of emerging issues that present new opportunities for transitional justice theory, practice and policy interventions. While this edition of the Forum is the fifth in a row, it is the third continental dialogue following the adoption of the African Union Transitional Justice (AUTJ) Policy in February 2019 and the second virtual convening during the COVID-19 pandemic and its impacts on the continent and on transitional justice processes.

      WHEN:         20th to 22nd October 2021.

      TIME:            Starting from 12:30   East Africa Time (EAT)

      WHERE:       All sessions will be hosted on virtual platforms and participants will be invited to register to secure their participation and attendance.

      OBJECTIVES:

      The fifth edition of the Continental TJ Forum aims to achieve the following three objectives:

      1. To review the extent to which TJ processes have (or have not) incorporated traditional justice mechanisms to secure and build the Africa we want in accordance with the AU theme of the year, “The Arts, Culture and Heritage: Levers for Building the Africa We Want”;
      2. To evaluate the application and applicability of transitional justice to address emerging challenges and crises;
      3. To generate concrete and practical ideas on how to effectively implement both the AUTJP and Study on Transitional Justice and Human and People’s Rights in Africa (TJ Study) Study) to address existing and ongoing challenges as well as new threats to Africa’s peace and democratic order.

      PARTICIPANTS:

      The Forum will bring together government officials working at the Ministries of Justice, Truth and Reconciliation Commissions, scholars, researchers, practitioners, policy makers, representatives of civil society organizations and other interested participants working on transitional justice issues in Africa.
