Addis Ababa, 17 November 2021: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Moussa Faki Mahamat, condemns in the strongest terms the killing of at least 10 people and the wounding of several others during demonstrations in Khartoum and other cities across Sudan on 17 November 2021, as well as the continued violence against opposition activists.

The Chairperson extends his sincere condolences to the bereaved families. He strongly urges the security forces to refrain from the excessive use of force against unarmed civilians exercising their basic political rights. He further reiterates the need to comply with continental and international human rights frameworks and to hold to account those using excessive force against civilian protesters.

The Chairperson reiterates his call for the authorities of Sudan to restore constitutional order and the democratic transition in line with the Constitutional Declaration of August 2019, the Juba Agreement for Peace in Sudan signed on 3 October 2020 as well as the AU PSC Communiqué adopted at its 1041th meeting held on 26 October 2021.
