WHY: Given the magnitude of intra-Africa migration on the continent, the dearth of information on the phenomenon, the appetite of Member States to manage migration (and the need for evidence-informed policy formulation and programming), the AU endorsed a decision to establish the African Centre for the Study and Research on Migration (the Centre) in Mali in 2006 (Executive Council decision Doc. EX.CL/290 (IX) ADD.2).
In addition and following the 2016 evaluation, the AUC revised the 2006 MPFA, which included formulating a plan of action for its implementation: The MPFA Plan of Action (2018 – 2030). The AU Assembly adopted the revised MPFA and its Plan of Action in January 2018. One of its priority activities is the establishment of a continental migration observatory and research/study centre.
The Executive Council reaffirmed its 2006 decision through Executive Council Decision EX.CL/987(XXXII) of January 2018. This was followed by decision (Assembly/AU/Dec.758(XXXIII)) of the 33rd Ordinary Session of the AU Assembly of February 2020 which adopted the statute establishing the African Centre for the Study and Research on Migration (the Centre) as a specialized technical office of the Commission. The latter decision paved the way for the establishment of the Centre. To support this, the AUC commissioned a mapping of the migration research and capacity building landscape on the continent in January 2022.
Participants: Participants at the workshop will be drawn from the following stakeholder organizations: The African Union Commission- Coordinating Committee on Migration; AU Regional Economic Communities (RECs); Regional CSO Umbrella Organizations; Academic / Capacity Building Institutions (Migration); UN Agencies; European Commission, Knowledge Centre on Migration and Demography (KCMD); International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD); External consultants and experts.
