        Body

The AU Commission, under the auspices of the Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security, held a High-Level Expert Engagement to review the African Union Policy Framework on Post-conflict Reconstruction and Development, from 9 - 14 September 2022, in Accra.

The engagement brought together 30 African Specialists and practitioners from across the continent to strategize on retooling the AU PCRD Policy for greater impact. This follows the holding of the inaugural PCRD Awareness Week in November 2021. It is recalled that the retooling exercise is a result of the decision of the Heads of State and Government of the African Union (AU/Dec.815XXXV of 6 February 2022) as well as the communique of the AU Peace and Security (PSC/COMM/1047 of 12 November 2021), given that the extant PCRD Policy was adopted by AU Heads of State and Government sixteen years ago, in Banjul, The Gambia.

The African experts undertook a comprehensive review of the AU PCRD architecture, mechanisms and processes and are expected to recommend the best ways to implement the Policy Framework in different areas such as conflict prevention, stabilization, early recovery and transitions.

The role of African experts is crucial in the neutral and objective assessment of the progress, gaps and achievements registered in the context of the effective implementation of the Policy Framework on PCRD.

This process will enhance the African Union's efforts aimed at strengthening support to AU Member States emerging from conflict.

The Department of Political Affairs, Peace and Security will commemorate the second PCRD Awareness Week in November 2022 as part of its efforts to raise awareness of all the stakeholders in the Continent about the critical role played by PCRD in building peace and stabilization in Africa. The PCRD week also aims to rally all stakeholders to become positive agents of change and peacebuilding at national regional and continental level.
