On 17 May 2025, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, expressed deep concern over the recent armed clashes in Tripoli, which resulted in loss of life and property damage.

He welcomed the ceasefire and the return of cautious calm, while urging all parties to refrain from actions or statements that could further destabilize the fragile security situation.

Emphasizing the importance of demilitarizing the capital, he supported efforts to restore civilian order and uphold the rights to peaceful assembly and freedom of expression in line with international law.

He called for national responsibility and engagement in a comprehensive political process to end Libya’s prolonged transitional phase and achieve lasting peace and development.

He reaffirmed the African Union’s strong support for Libya and urged all stakeholders to commit to the National Reconciliation Charter, signed in Addis Ababa in February 2025.
