Media Luncheon with the AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security

What: The African Union Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Ambassador Bankole Adeoye, will host his annual media engagement on Tuesday, 18 November 2025 at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Addis Ababa. Representatives of the media are invited to join the Commissioner for a working lunch, starting at 12:30pm.

This Luncheon is part of the commemoration of the fifth African Union Awareness Week on Post-Conflict Reconstruction and Development (PCRD) that will be from 17 to 23 November 2025 and launch of the 2nd edition of the PCRD Journal.

In attendance will be: members of the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC) and the United Nations Peace Building Commission (UNPBC); and partners in Addis.

When:  18 November 2025, 12.30pm

Where: Radisson Blu, Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Why: The week provides a platform for the AU to highlight its achievements in supporting post-conflict countries and also strategic responses to ongoing conflicts and crises on the continent including coups, thereby aligning with the African Union's aspirations and policy goals on peace, security and governance, by focusing on its commitment to stabilization and recovery across the continent.  

Specifically, the luncheon with the media, will provide a platform for Commissioner Bankole Adeoye to feedback on the implementations of the AU's proactive measures and policies designed to support the affected regions, bolster recovery efforts, and strengthen international partnerships. This event will also serve to raise global awareness of the AU’s critical role in fostering peace and development amidst these complex challenges. It will discuss challenges and mitigation measures, as well as highlight the role of other partners.

Additionally, media will have the chance to ask Commissioner Bankole questions on current security situations in Africa including Sudan, Madagascar, and other ongoing crises.

Background: The PCRD awareness week is a platform for promoting conflict prevention, peacebuilding, post-conflict reconstruction, and development efforts on the continent, reflecting a shared commitment to fostering sustainable peace and development in Africa. Its target audiences include African and international leaders, African citizens, development partners and leaders of warring partners.

As such, the media has an important role in awareness raising- highlighting the needs and challenges of post conflict areas; supporting social cohesion by promoting stories of successful reconciliation; disseminating correct information to target audiences; encouraging participation of various stakeholders in the process; and monitoring and reporting on progress, among others.
