The Chairperson of the AU Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, this evening graced the AU's Peace and Security Council’s (PSC) Third Flag Installation Ceremony, formally inaugurating the mandate of its 16th cohort & reaffirming the Union’s collective commitment to the promotion of peace, security, & stability across the continent, in line with the Council’s mandate under the AU Constitutive Act & relevant protocols.

The newly elected Members are the Republics of Benin, Gabon, Somalia, & South Africa, & the Kingdoms of Lesotho, & Morocco, alongside the re-elected members that include Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Sierra Leone, & Uganda, Somalia assumes its seat on the Council for the first time.

In his remarks, Chairperson Youssouf extended his warm congratulations to the incoming Members, underscoring both the privilege and responsibility inherent in serving on the Council. He emphasised that membership of the PSC carries a solemn obligation to act decisively, collectively, & in full alignment with the principles that underpin the African Peace & Security Architecture.

He further urged the Council to remain steadfast in its preventive diplomacy, conflict management, & be able to anticipate crises, respond with unity & resolve, & sustain peace in a manner that reflects the aspirations of the African people.

The Chairperson reaffirmed the Commission’s full support to the Council in the discharge of its mandate.
