The African Union and the African Group in Geneva Celebrate Africa Day 2026 under the Theme “Sixty-three Years of Unity, Integration and Development: Let’s Celebrate Together”

The Permanent Delegation of the African Union in Geneva, in collaboration with the African Group, organized on 28 May 2026 the celebration of Africa Day in the Palais des Nations, in Geneva, which started by honouring the AU Anthem.

At this occasion, H.E. Dr. Girma Amente NONO, Permanent Representative of the African Union in Geneva conveyed to the gathering the message of H.E. Mr. Mahmoud Ali YOUSSOUF, Chairperson of the African Union Commission, highlighting the theme of the 2026 Africa Day : “Sixty-three Years of Unity, Integration and Development, Let’s Celebrate Together” and reaffirming Africa’s unwavering commitment to the aspirations of Agenda 2063 and to building the Africa We Want. Dr. NONO also affirmed that, through joining efforts, we will be able to provide the people of Africa with the best possible future.

H.E. Amb. Eunice M.T. LUAMBIA, Permanent Representative of Zambia and current Chairperson of the African Group in Geneva also affirmed the relevance of Africa Agenda 2063 and its forward-looking nature aiming at improving the daily lives of all fellow Africans.

A video message from H.E. S.E. Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi and African Union Chairperson for 2026 was projected and highlighted Africa’s commitment to work tirelessly to face its challenges, take advantage of its dividends, and to unite.

After this solemn ceremony, and following the Cutting of Cake ceremony, guests of Africa could enjoy a cultural part consisting of a band of traditional Dammers from Burundi and music records from all regions of Africa. The cultural part also included enjoying African food and drinks graciously offered by several African Member States from all regions of the Continent.

The Diplomatic Community in Geneva representing all regions of the World, African Member States, representatives of International Organizations, UN Agencies, Civil Society, and Africa Diaspora attended the 2026 Africa Day celebration and could enjoy the flavour of African food, drinks and music in a very convivial atmosphere reflecting Africa traditions of hospitality and generosity. The event also showed case of African unity and commitment to realize the aspirations of Africa people to a better future. Africa Day celebration was also an opportunity to reaffirm the pioneer role of the African Union in shaping the future of the Continent, regionally and universally.

Finally, the Permanent Delegation of the African Union in Geneva is very grateful to the valuable support of African Missions in Geneva which contributed to the success of the 2026 Africa Day Celebration.
