    About

    The main objective of the Department in the Transport and Tourism sectors is to build a well interconnected and integrated networks of transport infrastructure that are able to support the provision of cost-effective, safe, secure and sustainable services in order to enable the continent to realise its full economic potential and physical integration.

    In line with the various Transport Declarations and Decisions, the AU Agenda 2063 flagship projects and its current strategic plan, the following are the key interventions the Commission will focus on to achieve the afore-mentioned objective:

    • Finalisation of the operational framework for the establishment of the Single African Air transport Market through implementation of the Yamoussoukro Decision and the African Civil Aviation Policy;
    • Implementation of the African Maritime Transport Charter;
    • Finalisation of the framework and launching of the High Speed Train Project and strengthening of regional railway training institutions;
    • Development of Transport Corridors;
    • Implementation of the African Road Safety Charter, the African Action Plan for the Global Road Safety Decade 2011-2020, the Intergovernmental Agreement on Trans-African Highway Norms and Standards; and development of TAH Maintenance Management Policy;
    • In the Tourism sector, the AUC will pursue the formulation and implementation of a continental tourism policy and strategic framework in the context of the AU Agenda 2063, whose goal is to make Africa the most preferred tourist destination in the World as well as market Africa's tourism attractions in cross-border packages under a "Brand Africa" of tourism products and services; and
    • Harmonisation of policy, strategic and regulatory frameworks for the tourism sector aligned with the AU/NEPAD Tourism Action Plan and the 2014 Seychelles Communique with the AU Continental Tourism framework.
