The African Union supports a peaceful and short transition to
democratically-elected institutions in Egypt
Addis Ababa, February 11, 2011 ‐ The Chairperson of the Commission of the African Union (AU), Jean
Ping, takes note of the decision of Mr. Hosni Mubarak to resign from his position as President of the
Arab Republic of Egypt. He notes that this resignation meets the aspirations of the Egyptian people,
including its youth, for a genuine opening of the political space towards the democratic
transformation of the country through the implementation of appropriate reforms.
The Chairperson of the Commission expresses the hope that the various stakeholders will
quickly agree on a short0 and peaceful transition that will allow Egyptians freely to choose their
leaders and to have representative institutions that respect freedom and human rights. The AU, which
respects the will of the people of Egypt, expresses its solidarity with them, and pledges its
commitment and readiness, in line with its relevant instruments, to support Egypt in this new phase of
