Media Briefing on the Upcoming Summit

The Secretary General of the African Union Commission, Ambassador Jean Mfasoni and the Director of Information and Communication, Mrs Habiba Mejri-Cheikh briefed some media representatives on 9 July 2012 on the theme of the 19th AU Summit: “Boosting Intra-African Trade”. They also addressed the issues on facilities aimed at enabling the coverage of the summit.
Among others issues to be discussed during the Summit, Ambassador Mfasoni mentioned democratic governance, the Peace and Security Council at presidential level on Mali and the relations between Sudan and South Sudan, the adoption of the 2013 budget and the election of the members of the AUC.
According to Ambassador Mfasoni, the Summit will also consider the humanitarian challenges faced by the continent, assess the MDG’s, evaluate the partnerships and the outcome of the just concluded Africa Global Diaspora Summit. “The preparations for the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the OAU in 2013 will be also on the agenda he added. Mrs Habiba Mejri-Cheikh on her part briefed the media on the different arrangements made by the DIC to ensure a successful coverage of the Summit. She enumerated the measures taken to provide a comfortable working environment for the journalists, the accreditation process to follow and the compliance to security measures.
