Background

In its efforts to promote African languages, the Department of Administration and Human Resources of the African Union Commission is looking for a language professional to design and deliver language classes on Arabic as a foreign language to its staff, their dependents, as well as staff of member states offices represented in Addis Ababa. African Union has four working languages namely Arabic English, French and Portuguese. The training centre is mandated to promote this working languages to enhance communication and integration. Funds are now available to recruit a teacher who would provide Arabic language education for a period of three (3 months)

Objective of the Assignment

The objective of the training is to enhance the proficiency skills of participants, by equipping them with the skills required to communicate in Arabic, which is one of the working languages of the AU. The Arabic teacher will be responsible for delivering the language acquisition course for participants by offering the best possible linguistic and educational experience to the participants

Scope of the Services

The prospective teacher will be expected to deliver classes 2 days a week. Each class will last one hour and 30 minutes (1hr 30 min). The classes will be at beginner’s level. The teacher will be expected to assess the participants through continuous assessment as well as end of term examination.

The provision of the teaching service will not entail an employment with African Union Commission. This will be a consultancy contract for the period of 3 months to deliver the Arabic classes with a possibility of an extension.

Qualification and Experience

The assignment will be implemented in the period of three months. The Consultant would be selected based on the following minimum educational and experience criteria:

Education
a) Minimum of Bachelors degree in language or related field as, Literature, Adult Education and Second language teaching
b) Qualification on teaching Arabic as a foreign language, such as CELTA or DELTA is required

Experience
a) At least 3 years’ experience of teaching Arabic as a Foreign Language
b) Bi-lingual fluency in Arabic and English
c) Evidence of other teaching experience in language education and training in an international organization or to foreigners/foreign organisation.

b) Inter-cultural awareness with well-developed interpersonal skills
c) Show strong work ethic
d) An articulate communicator
e) Inspire trust and confidence in participants

The African Union Commission now invites eligible Individual Consultants/Techers to indicate their interest in providing the Services. Interested candidate must provide information demonstrating that he/she has the required qualifications and relevant experience to perform the Services. Consulting firms or language teaching institutions may propose individual consultant, but only the experience and qualifications of individual shall be used in the selection process, and that his or her corporate experience shall not be taken into account, and the contract would be signed with the proposed individual.

For evaluation of the expressions of interest the following criteria will be applied:

a) General Education Qualification and Relevant Training (25 points);
b) Experience Related to the Assignment (75 points);

b) Current Curriculum Vitae
c) Financial Proposal (Quotation) indicating the daily rate and total professional fee.
