The African Union Commission and The United Arab Emirates Workshop on Preparation for the Dubai Expo 2020

What:
Following the decision of the Bureau of International des Expositions (BIE) General Assembly in Paris, 27th November 2013, Dubai, in the United Arab Emirates, the latter was awarded the rights of hosting a Universal Exposition in 2020, which will run from 20th October 2020 to 10th April 2021 with the theme “Connecting Minds, Creating the Future”. In advancing the collaboration between the African Union and the United Arab Emirates, the AUC has been invited by the government of the U.A.E as a key partner and stakeholder.

The workshop therefore aims to discuss the key role AUC will play during the Expo and determine the objectives expected from showcasing Africa at the Expo2020.

Expo2020 Dubai is the first World Expo to be held in the Middle East, Africa and South Asia (MEASA), and the first one to be hosted by an Arab nation. The Expo aims to attract more than 25 million visitors with 70% coming from beyond the nation’s borders.

Objectives:

*To define the overarching value addition for AU and its Members States in Expo2020;
*To develop a deeper understanding of the primary and subthemes for Expo2020;
*To develop the specific AU thematic statement;
*To determine the focus and participation in AU’s content and programming;
*To provide information and answer any inquiries at the request of the AU; and
*To agree on roles and responsibilities needed to pull together the AU pavilion.
