Mandate   
The AU Medical Services Directorate under the Bureau of the Deputy Chairperson is an outpatient polyclinic that provides curative, preventive, promotive and acute care/observation services to the AU staff and registered dependents, AU Consultants, African Diplomats accredited to Ethiopia and the AU, AU Delegates and Consultants. It also administers the Medical Assistance Plan and /or Medical Insurance within the AU Commission and Regional Offices.

Core Functions of AU Medical Services Directorate
The AU Medical Services Directorate provides:
•    continuing, comprehensive full-person curative, health promotive and preventive services for employees and dependents of the AU, African diplomats in Addis Ababa and delegates to AU Meetings.
•    Medical coverage to participantsduring AU conferences, meetings and summits.
•    Medical examinations for pre-employment and assessment for AU Commission, biennial medical assessment of AU personnel prior to renewal
•    Technical assistance in planning, running and maintaining health services for AU Peace Keeping Missions.

Type of Medical Centre
It is an outpatient Clinic with facilities for short-term management and observation for acute cases/ emergencies (admission). It is nonprofit-making.

Services Provided

(1)    Medical Consultation in:
•    General/internal medicine
•     Pediatrics
•     Dentistry
•     Ophthalmology
•     Obstetrics/gynecology

For other disciplines, specialists are called in from other medical Institutions when necessary

(2)    General Nursing Services
•    Receive patients
•    Provide paramedical or nursing care
•    Administer injectable drugs/vaccines
•    Health education
•    Dressing wounds
•    On duty for 24-hour services

(3)    Diagnostic Investigation
•    Laboratory
•    X-ray
•    Ultrasound scan
•    Electrocardiography

(4)    Pharmacy

Drug/vaccine and other pharmaceutical supplies procured and dispensed
•    During official AU working hours
•    during Weekends and Public Holidays
•    Emergency supplies.

(5)    Preventive/Health Promotive Care
•    Compulsory medical check-up for new recruits/families and upon renewal of contracts
•    Opportunistic case finding during regular consultations
•    Screening for some medical conditions or for close contacts of communicable disease
•    Follow up of specific medical conditions
•    Recall of high risk cases
•    Counseling services
•    Health education
•    Immunization

(6)    Medical Evacuation
Arrangements are made for emergencies and/or other complicated cases that cannot be managed locally

(7)    Billing for Diplomats (paying patients)
Consultations free for all customers
•    Cash for other services except special emergencies
•    AU Staff/families:
All services currently free

Monday to Friday
Morning 08:00 – 13:00 hours
Afternoon 14:00 – 17:00 hours

•    Part-time Specialist Consultations
By appointment, Monday to Friday

•    24 hour Service Coverage
(Outside official AU working hours)
Doctor and nurse on duty
Ambulance service available
