Partners' Coordination Conference on Water and Sanitation Programme in Africa

Justification

Given the critical role of Water and Sanitation in Africa and the increasing need to strengthen its coordination at continental level, there is need to define the critical role of the African Union Commission in this sector. There is also need to embark on collective efforts to ensure that water is sustainably managed at all levels including at trans- boundary points. Sharing of information, best practices and fostering collective learning is also key in the effort to ensure water for all. It is against this background that the African Union Commission is organizing a stakeholder meeting to address water and sanitation related matters at continental level.

Objectives

The overall objective of the conference is to map out water and sanitation related initiatives and projects that are contributing towards implementation of the Sharma El- Sheikh Commitments and the Water Vision 2025 on the continent, and identify priorities and gaps to be filled by the African Union Commission.

Specifically, the stakeholder meeting aims to achieve the following:

To provide a forum for sharing interventions on Water and Sanitation in Africa. Define roadmap for the Partners to support the next round of the African Water report to the AU Assembly.

Expected Outcomes

Establishment of a unique platform all Partners working in the water sector to come on board to support the RECs and Member States.

Documentation of key Water and Sanitation related initiatives in Africa. Recommendation of enhancing the implementation of the Africa water commitments.
