African Union Strategies and Policies to Combat Malnutrition, Promote Food Security and Sustainable Food Systems in Africa

Background: Micronutrient deficiencies constitute a serious public health problem and a major impediment to the socio-economic development in the continent. This situation is likely to further deteriorate as a result of the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Food fortification has been recognized as a panacea to these challenges. The African Union (AU) is collaborating with The Government of Côte d’Ivoire, and WFP through the Regional Centre of Excellence against Hunger and Malnutrition (CERFAM) to organize a two-day high-level consultation on food fortification.

Theme: "Food fortification: which dietary approach to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in Africa?”

Objective: Enable stakeholders to exchange and share experiences and good practices in food fortification at the global, regional, and national levels in order to support the African efforts at food fortification.

Expected outcome: The meeting hopes to come out with joint strategic approaches and actionable interventions by African governments, development partners and other key stakeholders to support the efforts of African countries to eliminate malnutrition in all its forms through food fortification.
