The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, today received Ambassador Elchin Amirbayov, Special Envoy of the President of Azerbaijan. Amb. Amirbayov conveyed a message from H.E. President Ilham Aliyev, including an invitation to the 13th Session of the World Urban Forum & the Leaders’ Summit in Baku in May 2026.

Their meeting underscored the commitment to strengthen AU–Azerbaijan cooperation, including through a prospective framework agreement to deepen strategic ties.

The Chairperson welcomed Azerbaijan’s comparative advantages in digital innovation, public service transformation, trade facilitation, & advanced connectivity; areas that align closely with Africa’s development priorities & the AU’s reform agenda.

Mr. Amirbayov reaffirmed Azerbaijan’s growing engagement across Africa, recognising the continent’s vast potential, & commended Mr. Youssouf's leadership, expressing his country’s readiness to partner with the AU Commission in cooperation.
