The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, H.E. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, welcomes the announcement by the Prime Minister of Pakistan of an immediate ceasefire between the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United States of America, and their respective allies, describing it as “a significant step that reflects commendable leadership and a shared commitment to de-escalation.”

The Chairperson noted that the development aligns with the African Union Commission’s consistent calls for restraint and the peaceful resolution of disputes.

He commended the constructive roles played by the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and other key mediators, including the Sultanate of Oman, the Republic of Türkiye, and the Arab Republic of Egypt, whose diplomatic efforts helped secure this outcome.

Highlighting the broader impact of the conflict, H.E. Youssouf stressed that “the repercussions have been felt globally, including across Africa, where disruptions to fuel supplies have driven inflation and increased the cost of basic commodities.”

He added that “this ceasefire presents a critical opportunity to ease the suffering of populations affected both directly and indirectly,” underscoring that “sustained dialogue and inclusive diplomacy will be essential to consolidating these gains.”

The Chairperson expresses his full support for the Islamabad Talks and urges all parties to maintain momentum toward a durable and comprehensive peace, reaffirming that diplomacy and dialogue, in line with the Charter of the United Nations, remain the only viable path to resolving international crises.
