AU welcomes and congratulates new Gambian President Adama Barrow

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia – 19 January 2017: The African Union Commission Chairperson, Dr. Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has welcomed and congratulated the new President of the Islamic Republic of The Gambia, H.E. Adama Barrow. President Barrow was sworn in at the Embassy of The Gambia, in Dakar, Senegal, on Thursday, 19 January 2017.
 
The Chairperson said, “Your swearing-in took place in extra-ordinary circumstances. However, we do hope and pray that the situation in The Gambia will soon normalise so that you can concentrate on serving all Gambians, who have entrusted you with the highest office of the land.” She hopes that the former President Yahya Jammeh will, in the interest of The Gambian people, bow out peacefully, in accordance with the Constitution.
 
The AU Commission Chairperson said The Gambia can continue to count on the unflinching support of the African Union.
 
The AU Commission Chairperson said in the days ahead, she will be sending President Barrow an invitation to attend the upcoming 28th Assembly of Heads of State and Government, scheduled to take place on 30-31 January, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
