Geneva, Switzerland, 23 April 2018 – The African Union Commission (AUC) is organizing from 23-27 April 2018, a workshop on the Development of United Nations Framework Classification African Mineral and Energy Resources Management system UNFC- AMREC) in line with the African Mining Vision (AMV) on the sideline of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) Resource Management week. The main objective of this workshop is to develop the core requirements for African Minerals and Energy Resources Classification and Management System (AMREC) as a unifying system for the classification and reporting of energy and mineral resources in Africa, to develop the framework of the Pan-African Reserves and Resources Reporting Code (PARC), to develop detailed guidance for application of AMREC in Africa, in line with the requirements of AMV , to Set up modalities for the governance of AMREC and PARC including the setting up of a UNFC-AMREC Working Group and to elaborate the requirements for training Competent Persons in Africa.

The first workshop on “Harmonization, adaptation, implementation and development of the United Nations Framework Classification for Resources (UNFC) in line with AMV” was organized from 2–6 October, in Cairo, Egypt.

In his statement, Mr. Frank Mugyenyi, Head of the Minerals Resource Unit and Sr. Industry Advisor in the Department of Trade and Industry of the African Union Commission, welcomed the participants to the meeting. He recalled the background of the workshop and pointed out that Africa cannot benefit from their natural resource endowments unless we have a unified mineral and energy resources classification system that is in line with the AMV and a public reporting code that ensures informed decision making on mineral resource development. He encouraged the participants to exchange ideas on this platform to come up with the expected outcome of the workshop.

The meeting is being attended by the Minerals sector professionals, Members of the Organization of African Geological Surveys (OAGS) and the Geological Society of Africa (GSAf), Members of the Expert Group on Resource Classification/United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, professional bodies, associations and other members of national mining associations.
