African Union convenes technical consultation to shape the implementation plan for CESA 26-35

The African Union Commission (AUC) convenes the Technical Consultation Meeting of the Technical Working Group (TWG) to draft the Implementation Plan for the Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 26–35), in Nairobi, from 15 to 16 May 2025.

Education stands at the heart of Africa’s sustainable development and economic transformation. Building on the progress and lessons learned from the previous strategy, CESA 16–25, this meeting marks a key step toward shaping a renewed implementation framework that guides the continent’s education agenda for the next decade. CESA 26–35 aims to accelerate the realization of Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want and Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4) by promoting inclusive, equitable and quality education for all.

The Technical Working Group brings together representatives from AU Member States, United Nations agencies, Regional Economic Communities (RECs), development partners, academia, civil society and private sector actors. This broad and inclusive composition ensures a collaborative, multi-sectoral and evidence-based process for developing the new implementation plan.

The consultation meeting defines strategic priorities for CESA 26–35 in alignment with Agenda 2063 and SDG4, ensuring that Africa’s future education systems are rooted in quality, inclusivity, relevance and resilience. It also focuses on developing a comprehensive Implementation Plan, outlining key pillars, strategic objectives, expected outcomes, institutional roles and policy actions.

The meeting includes sessions dedicated to co-developing the roadmap, gathering feedback to refine proposed elements and conducting thematic discussions on strategic interventions, implementation modalities, governance, monitoring, evaluation, accountability and learning (MEAL) and resource mobilization. Participants also discuss the formation of a dedicated Task Team and Secretariat to consolidate inputs, maintain timelines, and coordinate ongoing stakeholder engagement. The meeting concludes with the identification of next steps and a proposed timeline for finalizing the Implementation Plan.

By the end of the meeting, participants deliver a collaboratively developed Implementation Plan, including proposed activities, timelines and coordination mechanisms. Consolidated insights and recommendations from interactive feedback sessions ensure that sectoral priorities are accurately reflected.

This meeting lays the foundation for a renewed, transformative, and action-oriented strategy that will guide Africa’s education sector from 2026 to 2035.
