Welcoming Remark by H.E Fitsum Assefa, Minister of Planning and Development, Ethiopia, at 2nd Africa Climate Summit

September 08, 2025

Your Excellency Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia;
Excellencies, Heads of State and Government.
Honorable Commissioners of the African Union,
Esteemed Ministers and Ambassadors,
All protocol Observed.

Welcome to Addis Ababa and to the Second Africa Climate Summit, convened under the theme: “Accelerating Global Climate Solutions: Financing for Africa’s Resilient and Green Development.” Ethiopia is honored to host you in the capital of our continent, Addis Ababa.

We gather not merely to discuss climate change, but to shape an African decade of delivery a decade in which ambition becomes pipeline, and pipeline becomes investment backed by sound policy and strong partnerships. The second African climate summit focus on show casing Africa climate solutions, mobilizes finance at scale, and turns our natural endowments, human capital and innovation ecosystems into shared prosperity.

The second climate summit is where we commit to do these things together with speed, at scale, and with integrity.

Allow me to share how we prepared to host ACS2 because the process reflects the spirit we seek to scale. Following the decision of Africa’s Heads of State proposing Ethiopia as host, we immediately mobilized expertise across the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia working together with the African Union Commission and partner organizations across our region and the world. Together, we defined the planning framework and established national coordination structures fit for a summit of this scale: clear governance, roles and decision lines.

We convened multidisciplinary, multi-stakeholder consultations policymakers, youth and community leaders to co-create the Concept Note and shape the detailed agenda you see this week.

Over the next three days, the programme moves from ideas to action. Day One focuses on nature-based solutions, technology and innovation, clean energy and resilient infrastructure. Day Two deepens cooperation on climate adaptation and resilience, including early warning and health. Day Three shifts decisively to financing African-led solutions transforming climate finance from episodic aid into strategic investment that brings projects to financial close. Across all tracks, we will advance the Addis Ababa Leaders’ Declaration and a focused Call to Action that speaks with one African voice to the upcoming global platforms.

Excellencies
You are in a city transforming fast, with green corridors, efficient transport, vibrant public spaces and culture alive at every corner. As part of the summit program, we have included a city tour to the remarkable attractions’ areas of Entoto Hills and National Park; explore Unity Park, where history, biodiversity and public art converge; visit to Adwa Museum, a window into the story and spirit of our capital.

Excellencies
it is now my honour to invite His Excellency, Dr. Abiy Ahmed, Prime Minister of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, to deliver the official opening of the Second African climate summit.

Thank you.
