Directorate of Health and Humanitarian Affairs

Directorate of Health and Humanitarian Affairs

oversees the policy and strategic development and delivery on implementation of decisions of AU policy organs in the areas of Health, Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development. The Department has two (2) Directorates, Five (5) Divisions and 10 Specialized Institutions:

  1. The Directorate of Health and Humanitarian Affairs oversees policy and strategy development and delivery, implementation of the African Union’s transformative Agenda 2063 (aspirations 1 and 6) and decisions of the African Union (AU) policy organs in the areas of health and humanitarian affairs. The directorate Comprises two (2) Divisions and is tasked to:
  2. Respond to vital generic health issues related to health policy and delivery systems, nutrition and other related public health issues and challenges
  3. Play a leading role in policy development, advocacy, coordination, monitoring and evaluation on AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria and other infectious diseases
  4. Provide continental direction to the achievement of durable solutions for addressing humanitarian crises
  5. Address matters of population and development on the continent.
  • Health Systems, Diseases and Nutrition Division

The division of health systems, diseases and nutrition responds to vital generic health issues related to health policy and delivery systems, nutrition and other related public health issues and challenges that require a concerted and coordinated approach at a continental level. The division further plays a leading role in policy development, advocacy, coordination, monitoring and evaluation on AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria and other infectious diseases.

  • Humanitarian Affairs Division

The division of humanitarian affairs provides continental direction to the achievement of durable solutions for addressing humanitarian crises. This includes pursuing actions to alleviate the plight of refugees, returnees and internally displaced persons (IDPs), including meeting their immediate protection and assistance needs as a result of man-made and natural disasters.

  • The AIDS Watch Africa (AWA) Secretariat

AIDS Watch Africa (AWA) is a statutory entity of the African Union with the specific mandate to lead advocacy, accountability, and resource mobilization efforts to advance a robust African response to end AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria by 2030. AWA secretariat is hosted within the division of Health Systems, Diseases and Nutrition, Directorate of Health and Humanitarian Affairs.
