International Mine Awareness Day to be commemorated at the African Union Headquarters

Addis Ababa, 3 April 2013: The African Union (AU), in collaboration with the United Nations Mine Action Services (UNMAS), the United Nations Office to the African Union (UNOAU) and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) will hold a mine risk awareness event to commemorate International Mine Awareness Day, on Thursday, 4 April 2013, at 10:00 a.m., at the AU Headquarters New Conference Complex (AUCC).
AU Member States, Regional Economic Communities, representatives from UNMAS and UNOAU, experts from the ICRC weapons contamination and arms units, International partners and AUC staff will be attending the event.
The International Mine Awareness Day is observed on 4 April of each year and aims at promoting greater awareness of the danger of Mines and Explosive Remnants of War (ERW), with emphasis on call for universal adherence to the international treaties and instruments banning such weapons.

Journalists are kindly invited to attend the ceremony at 10:00am to be followed by a press conference at 11:30
