Addis Ababa, 5 March 2019: The Chairperson of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, welcomes the successful presidential election of 24 February 2019 in Senegal. He particularly congratulates the candidates and the people of Senegal who, through their exemplary and peaceful mobilization, have once again demonstrated their commitment to democracy, peace and stability. He encourages them to persevere in their efforts, including by settling all matters relating to the electoral process through peaceful means and the use of the instruments provided for that purpose.

Following the provisional results published on 28 February 2019 by the National Commission for the Census of Votes, the Chairperson of the Commission congratulates President Macky Sall on his re-election. He wishes him every success in this new mandate, and reiterates his commitment to continue working with him in the pursuit of the continental agenda.

The Chairperson of the Commission notes that the African Union Election Observation Mission and other international observers concluded that the voting was conducted in a calm and serene manner. This success honours not only the Senegalese people and political stakeholders, but also the entire African continent.
