African Union And American Bar Association Sign Letter Of Agreement To Support Au Rule Of Law Initiatives
Washington D.C., 14 November 2019 – The African Union and the American Bar Association concluded a Letter of Agreement on Support to the African Union Rule of Law Initiatives, on Thursday, 14 November 2019 in Washington D.C.

The Letter of Agreement (LOA) is intended to facilitate co-operation and collaboration between the two organisations, in areas of mutual interest. It is an intensification of the existing cooperation and collaboration between the two organisations, which is implemented through the September 2017 Letter of Agreement on Rule of Law and Criminal Justice Assistance between the Government of the United States of America and the African Union Commission.

The objectives of the LOA include to promote the capabilities of the AUC to fulfill its mandate; advance and encourage respect for the rule of law and good governance through exchanges of experience, comparative law, and mutual respect and learning; and cooperate to implement a project to support the AUC through training, expertise-sharing, and mentorship.

The Agreement is expected to train AUC Staff in key areas such as legal drafting, maritime law and law of the sea, the law of treaties, transitional justice, election observation and rule of law fundamentals, to name a few.
The Agreement was signed on behalf of the African Union by Ambassador Dr. Namira Negm, the Legal Counsel of the AU, and Mr. Jack Rives, Executive Director of the American Bar Association, on behalf of the American Bar Association.
