NOTES FOR EDITORS:

The African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights came into force on 21 October 1986. This date has been declared, and is being celebrated annually as an African Human Rights Day.

By virtue of article 30 of the African Charter, the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) was established as an enforcement mechanism for the African Charter. The ACHPR is composed of eleven Commissioners, nationals of Member States of the African Union elected in their individual capacity.
