President Felix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo Elected Chair Of The AU For The Year 2021

Leadership of the African Union changed hands at the 6-7 February 34th Ordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, as President Cyril Ramaphosa of the Republic of South Africa handed over the baton as Chair of the African Union to President Felix- Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), who will lead the Union for the year 2021.

In line with tradition, President Tshisekedi was presented with the symbols of the Union, including the AU flag by the then outgoing AU Chairperson, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa  who was represented in the ceremony  held in Addis Ababa by the AU Commission Chairperson Mr Moussa Faki Mahamat. 

The new bureau of the Union for 2021 was also elected as follows:

  1. Chair of the African Union - Democratic Republic of Congo, (Central African region)
  2. First Vice President - Republic of Senegal, (Western Region);
  3. Second Vice President – Union of Comoros, (Eastern Region);
  4. Third Vice President – Arab Republic of Egypt, (Northern Region);
  5. Rapporteur – Republic of South Africa, (Southern Region)
