AU Commission Chairperson Discusses Progress And Challenges From 2017 to 2020

Prior to his re-election as AU Commission Chairperson, Mr. Moussa Faki Mahamat gave an interview on the performance of the Commission from 2017 to 2020, within the context of the Aspirations and Goals of Agenda 2063.

In the wide ranging interview, he pointed to key successes as well as challenges faced by the Commission, in areas such as leading continental development as well as in the management of the Commission’s affairs and its staff members. He also spoke about the initiatives underway to ensure the AU Commission addresses the opportunities for delivering on its mandates going forward

The Chairperson addressed issues related to Silencing the Guns in Africa, the African Continental Free Trade Area, Africa’s joint response to the COVID-19 pandemic, institutional reforms of the Union including financial and administrative reforms, regional integration, the African Common Position on global issues, continental and global perceptions of the AU, infrastructure development, good governance, democracy and accountability, freedom of movement, and subsidiarity with other continental organisations.
