The African Union Commission (AUC) announces the arrival of its Election Observation Mission (AUEOM), on 29 September 2024, in the Republic of Tunisia. The Mission’s goal is to observe the last days of the election campaign, election day operations, comprising the opening of polling stations, voting operations as well as the closing and counting procedures for the first round of the presidential election. The Mission ends on 10 October 2024, date of its departure from Tunisia.

Following the decision of the President of the AUC, His Excellency (H.E.) Moussa FAKI MAHAMAT and on the proposal of H.E. Ambassador Bankole ADEOYE, Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security (CPAPS) of the African Union, the AUEOM is led by H.E. Komi Selom KLASSOU, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Togo.

The AUEOM is comprised of 40 Short Term Observers (STO) including: Ambassadors accredited to the African Union, Pan African Parliamentarians (PAP), Members of Election Management Bodies (EMB), Civil Society Organizations (CSO) the Academia and African Election Experts, drawn from 21 member states namely: Algeria, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Comoros, Congo-Brazzaville, Democratic Republic of Congo, Djibouti, Egypt, Ethiopia, Ghana, Libya, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sahrawi, Senegal, Togo and Zimbabwe.

In line with its mandate and observance of adherence to international, continental and regional instruments and standards as well as the legal framework governing elections in the Republic of Tunisia, the AUEOM shall conduct an independent, objective, impartial and credible observation and shall where necessary, propose appropriate recommendations. The Mission will interact with stakeholders of the electoral process, as well as other international missions and development partners.

The AUEOM shall present its Preliminary Statement on 8 October 2024, followed by a detailed final report, to the Tunisian stakeholders. These documents shall equally be available on the African Union website.
