Global Green Growth Week 2017 “Unlocking Africa’s Green Growth Potential” Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

What, when and where?

The Global Green Growth Week 2017 (GGGWeek2017) will take place on October 17-20, 2017 at the United Nations Conference Centre (UNCC), in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia under the theme “Unlocking Africa’s Green Growth Potential”. GGGWeek2017 is organized by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) in partnership with the African Union Commission and the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia.

Objective

GGGWeek2017 aims to strengthen and catalyze green growth in Africa and globally in order to achieve Nationally Determined Contributions to the Paris Agreement and make progress on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

Participants

GGGWeek2017 will bring under the same roof high level ministers, African union officials, institutional investors and decision makers, stakeholders from the public and private sectors, international organizations, and civil society organizations. The following leading institutions will share their green growth experiences during the event: the African Development Bank, the African Union, the Economic Commission for Africa, the CGIAR Consortium, the Global Green Growth Forum, the Green Growth Knowledge Platform, the Green Technology Centre, the International Renewable Agency, the New Climate Economy, World Resources Institute and PricewaterhouseCoopers, etc.

Key thematic areas to be addressed during the Global Green Growth Week

- Mobilizing green/climate finance to bankable projects in developing countries;
- Sustainably managing resources to address water and food security challenges; and
- Developing and adopting policies that drive environmentally sustainable and socially inclusive economic growth.

The AU at the Global Green Growth Week 2017

The African Union Commission through the Department of Rural and Agriculture will lead the event on “Green Strategies and Success Stories in Africa”. The overall objective of the event is to create a platform for discussion on how green strategies can contribute to the achievement of AU Agenda 2063 aspiration 1 which focuses on “A prosperous Africa based on inclusive growth and sustainable development”. It will also be a window of opportunity to assess the need, opportunities and challenges to the implementation of green growth objectives in Africa.
